Newhaven Lookout is Perched on the cliff top on Castle Hill over 250 feet above sea level, it provides a panoramic view of Newhaven Harbour entrance and to seaward covering over 400 square miles of sea on a clear day. Also having very good coverage for VHF radio reception. The Watchstation is of value in many ways at Newhaven where there is plenty of leisure and professional activity at sea and along the local coastline, all of which can be observed by the Station staff who have direct contact with all the Rescue and Emergency Services when needed. The Lookout at Newhaven was built in the early 1960’s to replace a small Lookout inside Newhaven Fort.

But due to cutbacks over the years HM Coastguard had reduced the regular watchkeeping and only used the Lookout for casualty working and in recent years had tried to have it demolished. But with the vigorous support of the local people, the National Coastwatch Institute, the Lewes District Council, Newhaven Town Council, and the Castle Hill Group it has been saved and is now leased to the National Coastwatch Institute a registered charity (No 1045645) to re-establish a regular watchkeeping service. This is the 26th Lookout station reopened by the National Coastwatch since they first started in 1994 at Bass Point in Cornwall.
